Morbius, Rhythm Section and Ghostbusters Release Dates Set

Sony Pictures has announced some big updates to its upcoming 2019 and 2020 slate that include the Morbius and Ghostbusters release dates. Paramount Pictures and Lionsgate have also made changes to the release schedule for two of their films.

We’ll kick things off with Sony’s comic book adaptation Morbius (aka “Morbius the Living Vampire”), which has been moved back a few weeks from July 10, 2020 to July 31, 2020. The movie has that date to itself for now. Daniel Espinosa (LifeSafe House) will direct Morbius, which stars Jared Leto, Adria Arjona, and Matt Smith. In the comics, Morbius (Leto) is dying from a rare disorder dissolving his blood cells and secretly begins working on a cure. After experimenting with serums that include distilled fluids from bats, Morbius turns into something resembling a vampire and is fearful that he will hurt his fiancée, Martine (Arjona).

Moving into Morbius‘ previous July 10, 2020 date is Jason Reitman’s recently-announced Ghostbusters. The new Sony movie is the next chapter in the original franchise and not a reboot. Reitman is reportedly casting four teens for the movie, two boys and two girls. In addition to the Ghostbusters release news, you can watch the first teaser here.

Next up is Sony’s Greyhound, the adaptation of C.S. Forester’s novel The Good Shepherd starring and written by Tom Hanks. Also starring Elisabeth Shue, the Aaron Schneider-directed film was originally scheduled for March 22, 2019 but will now hit theaters on May 8, 2020. The only other film currently on that date is Legally Blonde 3Greyhound is described as follows: “In the early days of WWII, an international convoy of 37 Allied ships, led by captain Ernest Krause (Hanks) in his first command of a U.S. destroyer, crosses the treacherous North Atlantic while hotly pursued by wolf packs of Nazi U-boats.”

Moving up into 2019, Sony has pushed back the Mister Rogers movie, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, from October 18, 2019 to November 22, 2019. The film will be competing with Frozen 2 and the below-mentioned The Rhythm Section on that date. Also starring Tom Hanks, the movie is directed by Marielle Heller (Diary of a Teenage Girl). A timely story of kindness triumphing over cynicism, the movie based on the true story of a real-life friendship between Fred Rogers and journalist Tom Junod. After a jaded magazine writer (Matthew Rhys) is assigned a profile of Fred Rogers, he overcomes his skepticism, learning about empathy, kindness, and decency from America’s most beloved neighbor.

Sony’s Screen Gems will release the thriller Black and Blue on September 20, 2019. Directed by Deon Taylor, Black and Blue follows a rookie cop (Naomi Harris) in New Orleans who accidentally stumbles on some fellow officers murdering a drug dealer, an incident captured by the body cam on her uniform. When they then fail to execute her, she escapes and is hunted throughout the night by the narcs who are desperate to destroy the incriminating footage.

Production was previously delayed on Paramount’s espionage thriller The Rhythm Section due to Blake Lively’s hand injury. The film had been set for a February 22, 2019 release but will now open in theaters November 22, 2019, the same date as Frozen 2 and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. From James Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, and directed by Reed Morano, The Rhythm Section is adaptation of the first of British thriller writer Mark Burnell’s Stephanie Patrick series of four novels. It stars  Blake Lively, Jude Law, and Sterling K. Brown.

Lionsgate, meanwhile, has completely taken Chaos Walking off of its schedule. The adaptation of Patrick Ness’s young adult book trilogy was previously set for a March 1, 2019 release. The Doug Liman-directed film, starring Tom Holland, Daisy Ridley, Mads Mikkelsen, Nick Jonas, Demian Bichir, Kurt Sutter, and David Oyelowo, was said to be in need of major reshoots.
