On this week’s Legion of Leia podcast, my co-host Anastasia Washington and I welcome Star Trek: Deep Space Nine‘s Chase Masterson. She’s the co-founder of the Pop Culture Hero Coalition and works tirelessly to help those being bullied. Right now she’s promoting a Kickstarter for SuperKids! A Mental Health Support Coloring Book, an interactive book for hospitalized children, providing mental health help for fear, depression, anxiety, anger, and physical pain. The book was written by frequent podcast guest (and my frequent Psych Geeks book co-author) Dr. Janina Scarlet, creator of superhero therapy. It was illustrated by Lora Innes and produced by Chase. The book was created by Len Wein, whom I was lucky enough to know and do panels with.
Guys, this project is so wonderful and I’m so excited for you to listen to what Chase has to say. She’s been a podcast guest before and is one of the loveliest people ever. The work she and the Pop Culture Hero Coalition do is incredible. The Kickstarter has reached its main goal, but they’re trying to reach their stretch goal. The campaign ends on January 16.
Here is the info for you: “We are proud to have a renowned team to make this project powerful — and our SuperKids deserve nothing less! And in all of this, we honor the life of Len Wein, creator of X-Men’s Wolverine and Storm — who overcame life-threatening illness when he was a child.
“Non-profit Pop Culture Hero Coalition is raising funds to distribute the interactive SuperKids coloring book — which provides mental health support to children who are hospitalized with severe, physical illness — helping them with fear, anxiety, depression, anger, chronic pain, and feelings of powerlessness and marginalization.
“Facing a LIFE-THREATENING ILLNESS is hard enough — but most of us can only imagine the emotional challenges these children face. We hope you’ll join us as we give these kids the PSYCHOLOGICAL SUPPORT they need!
“Pop Culture Hero Coalition’s all-volunteer staff has teamed up with Superhero Therapy author Dr. Janina Scarlet, as well as IDW Wynona Earp comic book artist Lora Innes and Ultimate Spiderman writer / My Little Pony artist Thom Zahler to create this one-of-a-kind, interactive book.
“This book is dedicated to the memory of comics icon Len Wein, who created WOLVERINE, STORM, and SWAMP THING, and made an indelible mark on the world of pop culture. Len started reading comics when he was hospitalized as a 7 year-old child — and this book will be distributed to children’s hospitals throughout the U.S. and Europe.”
