A few noteworthy updates have come in from Hollywood this Friday afternoon, starting with the Minecraft movie. According to Variety, Peter Sollett (Raising Victor Vargas) has been hired by Warner Bros. Pictures to write and direct an adaptation of the popular video game.

The trade says that the story follows a teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers who, after the malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, must save their beautiful, blocky Overworld.

The Minecraft movie will be produced by Vertigo’s Roy Lee and Jon Berg, developer Mojang, as well as the late Jill Messick. Jon Spaihts will executive produce.

Next up, TheWrap is reporting that Iron Man and Men in Black International screenwriters Matt Holloway and Art Marcum are in talks to rewrite the script for the He-Man movie, Masters of the Universe, for Sony Pictures and Mattel Films. The script was previously written by David S. Goyer, who is also an executive producer. Aaron and Adam Nee are set to direct the film.

Masters of the Universe is produced by Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch, along with DeVon Franklin. Mattel’s Julia Pistor and David Voss will executive produce.

Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow) will direct Eddie Murphy in Paramount Pictures' Coming to America 2

Deadline, meanwhile, says that Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow) will direct Eddie Murphy in Paramount Pictures’ Coming to America 2, the sequel to the 1988 comedy. Brewer just directed Murphy in Dolemite Is My Name. In the sequel, Murphy’s Akeem learns about a long lost son and must return to America to meet his unlikely heir to the throne of Zamunda.

The site adds that Kenya Barris is rewriting a script by original Coming to America writers Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield. Murphy is producing with Kevin Misher and Barris is executive producing.

And last but not least, The Hollywood Reporter has learned that New Line Cinema is rebooting its Final Destination horror franchise with Saw‘s Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan writing the script.

The trade adds that plot details for the sixth installment of the franchise are being kept under wraps for now.
