With yesterday’s box office grosses, Illumination and Universal PicturesDr. Seuss’ The Grinch box office has crossed $500 million worldwide, marking the sixth Illumination film to reach the half-billion mark.

Domestically, Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch opened No. 1 with $67.6 million — Illumination’s seventh No. 1 opening — and has now grossed $270 million to become the sixth-highest-grossing film of 2018 and the second-highest-grossing animated film of the year. It was the only non-sequel or non-franchise title among the Top 10 highest-grossing films of the year.

Internationally, the film currently stands at $231 million and has remained in the Top 10 for nine consecutive weeks. It opened No. 1 in 30 territories, including Norway, U.K. & Ireland, India, Mongolia, Thailand, Vietnam, Trinidad, Cyprus, Iceland, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovenia, France, Australia, Spain, Poland, Belgium, Central America, Austria, New Zealand, Bolivia, Estonia, Lithuania, Mexico, Ecuador, Hungary, South Africa, Greece, Latvia and Ukraine.

Globally, the film scored the highest-grossing opening for a Christmas-themed film and went on to become the highest-grossing Christmas-themed movie ever, and the biggest Dr. Seuss film adaptation ever.

For their work on the film, Illumination Founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and longtime collaborator Janet Healy recently received a PGA nomination for Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch.

Narrated by Grammy Award winner and Oscar nominee Pharrell Williams, Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch stars Academy Award nominee Benedict Cumberbatch (Dr. Strange, Sherlock) as the infamous Grinch, who lives a solitary life inside a cave on Mt. Crumpit with only his loyal dog, Max, for company. The voice cast also includes Rashida Jones (Parks and Recreation, The Muppets) as Donna Who, Kenan Thompson (Saturday Night Live) as Bricklebaum, Cameron Seely (The Greatest Showman) as Cindy-Lou Who, and featuring legendary actress Angela Lansbury (Anastasia, Beauty and the Beast) as the mayor of Whoville.

Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch will be available on Digital and via the digital movie app Movies Anywhere on January 22, 2019, and on 4K Ultra HD, 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD and On Demand on February 5, 2019.

Next up this June, Illumination brings summer audiences the Kevin Hart, Tiffany Haddish and Harrison Ford-led The Secret Life of Pets 2, the much-anticipated follow-up to 2016’s blockbuster about the lives our pets lead after we leave for work or school each day.
