Margot Robbie took to her Instagram account today to tease the Birds of Prey script. As you can see in the photo, Robbie manually wrote in the subtitle for the film: “And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn.” Warner Bros. has confirmed that this is indeed the official subtitle for the film.
The cast includes Robbie as Harley Quinn, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, and Ewan McGregor as the villain Black Mask.
Winstead recently spoke to Bionic Buzz (via Screen Rant) and confirmed that filming will begin in January 2019. “It’s sort of a spinoff of Suicide Squad,” she said. ” It kind of follows Harley Quinn, which is Margot Robbie’s character from those films, and this sort of girl gang that she puts together. I play Huntress, and we’ve got Black Canary, played by Jurnee Smollett-Bell, and Rosie Perez and Ewan McGregor. It’s a really fun, fun cast. We haven’t started shooting yet, but we start shooting in January, and I can’t wait.”
Birds of Prey will have Harley Quinn, Huntress, and Black Canary teaming up to protect Cain when she comes across a diamond belonging to Black Mask, a kingpin in Gotham City’s criminal underworld.
Robbie, who is also producing, previously said Birds of Prey will be “different,” rated R, and made with a “much smaller budget” than Suicide Squad, in which she first played Harley Quinn.
Cathy Yan will direct the Warner Bros. release from a script by Christina Hodson. Birds of Prey will be produced by Robbie, Kroll & Co Entertainment’s Sue Kroll, and Clubhouse Pictures’ Bryan Unkeless. Warner Bros. and DC have set a February 7, 2020 release date for the film.
