Warner Bros. Television has announced that Virginia Madsen (Designated Survivor, Sideways) has been cast as Maria Sunderland in DC Universe‘s Swamp Thing. Maria is an original character created for the live-action series, which will premiere in 2019.
Maria Sunderland traded in her privileged upbringing for the swamps of Marais when she married local business magnate Avery Sunderland, but Avery’s life-time obsession with the swamp has driven a wedge between him and Maria. Her poised existence is shaken further when the return of Abby Arcane reawakens a deep grief over the loss of Maria’s daughter, Shawna, drawing her into the dark supernatural mysteries emerging from the swamp.
Virginia Madsen joins a cast that includes Crystal Reed as Abby Arcane, Maria Sten as Liz Tremayne, Jennifer Beals as Sheriff Lucilia Cable, and Jeryl Prescott as Madame Xanadu.
In Swamp Thing, when CDC researcher Abby Arcane (Crystal Reed) returns to her childhood home of Houma, Louisiana, in order to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus, she develops a surprising bond with scientist Alec Holland – only to have him tragically taken from her. But as powerful forces descend on Houma, intent on exploiting the swamp’s mysterious properties for their own purposes, Abby will discover that the swamp holds mystical secrets, both horrifying and wondrous – and the potential love of her life may not be dead after all.
