The first trailer for Ophelia has arrived. Starring Daisy Ridley (Star Wars: Episode IX), Naomi Watts, Clive Owen, George MacKay, Tom Felton, and Devon Terrell, the film will next play at the MINI British Film Festival in Australia starting on Monday, October 29.
Set in the 14th Century but spoken in a contemporary voice, Ophelia is a re-imagining of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Ophelia (Ridley) takes center stage as the Queen’s (Watts) most trusted lady-in-waiting. Beautiful and intelligent, she soon captures the attention of the handsome Prince Hamlet and a forbidden love blossoms. As war brews, lust and betrayal are tearing Elsinore Castle apart from within and Ophelia must decide between her true love or her own life in order to protect a very dangerous secret.
Owen plays Claudius, MacKay is Hamlet, Felton portrays Laertes, and Terrell plays Horatio.
The film was directed by Claire McCarthy (The Waiting City) and is based on the award-winning novel by Lisa Klein. The script was written by Semi Chellas. The producers are Daniel Bobker, Sarah Curtis, Ehren Kruger, and Paul Hanson. The executive producers are Sasha Shapiro, Anton Lessine, Elissa Friedman, Bert Marcus, Matthew Hart, and Alastair Burlingham.
The production companies behind the film are Covert Media, Bobker/Kruger Films, and Forthcoming Films.
Ophelia has been rated PG-13 for a scene of violence/bloody images, some sensuality, and thematic elements. The movie, which was shot in Prague in 2017, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 22, 2018.
