Mattel Films is teaming up with Warner Bros. Pictures on the Barbie movie, which had been in development at Sony Pictures for years. Playing the popular doll will be Margot Robbie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
At Sony, Anne Hathaway and Amy Schumer were previously attached to star in the film. The rights to the Barbie movie reverted back to Mattel earlier this year.
Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins is reportedly circling the Warner Bros. project, but there’s been no talks or offer yet. The Barbie screenplay was originally written by Hilary Winston, with Amy Schumer and her sister Kim Caramele having done a rewrite. Whether Warner Bros. will keep that script is unknown.
At Sony, the project centered on a misfit living in a land of perfect Barbies who comes to the real world, where her looking different turns into an asset.
Robbie will next be seen in Mary Queen of Scotts and is currently filming Sony’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. She will be working again with Warner Bros. on DC movie Birds of Prey, in which she will reprise her role as Harley Quinn.
