Live-Action Lilo and Stitch Movie in the Works at Disney

The studio has hired Mike Van Waes to write the script

A live-action Lilo and Stitch movie is in the works at The Walt Disney Company, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, who are already working on the live-action Aladdin movie, are producing what will be a live-action/CG hybrid. The studio has hired Mike Van Waes to write the script.

The 2002 animated adventure was written and directed by Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders. Sanders voiced Stitch and the voice cast also includes Daveigh Chase, Tia Carrere, David Ogden Stiers, Kevin McDonald, Ving Rhames, Jason Scott Lee, and Kevin Michael Richardson.

In Lilo and Stitch, Stitch is a runaway genetic experiment from a faraway planet who crash lands on Earth. As he wreaks havoc on the Hawaiian Islands, he becomes the mischievous adopted alien “puppy” of an independent little girl named Lilo and learns about loyalty, friendship, and ‘ohana, the Hawaiian tradition of family.

The movie spawned several direct-to-video sequels with Stitch! The Movie (2003) and Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch (2005). A TV series, Lilo & Stitch: The Series, also ran from 2003 to 2006. The series wrapped up with a third sequel titled Leroy & Stitch, which premiered in June of 2006.

The Hollywood Reporter says it is unclear if the live-action Lilo and Stitch movie will be a theatrical release or if it will be coming to Disney’s streaming service in late 2019.
