Rebecca Ferguson in Talks to Play Lady Jessica in Dune

Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible – FalloutThe Greatest Showman) is in talks to play Timothée Chalamet’s mom in the adaptation of Legendary‘s Dune, the adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel to be directed by Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049Arrival).

Set in the distant future, Dune tells the story of Paul Atreides whose family accepts control of the desert planet Arrakis. As the only producer of a highly-valuable resource, control of Arrakis is highly contested among the noble families. After Paul and his family are betrayed, the story explores themes of politics, religion, and man’s relationship to nature as Paul leads a rebellion to restore his family’s control of Arrakis.

The Hollywood Reporter says Ferguson would play Atreides’ mother, Lady Jessica, who escapes with him into the desert.

Villeneuve, Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts wrote the script. Villeneuve will also produce the movie along with Thomas Tull, Mary Parent and Cale Boyter, with Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt and Kim Herbert serving as executive producers. Dune is expected to begin production in early 2019.

The book was previously adapted into a 1984 movie directed by David Lynch and starring Kyle MacLachlan. It was also turned into a miniseries on the Sci-Fi Channel in 2000.

Ferguson can be seen in the upcoming Men in Black movie, The Kid Who Would be King, and Doctor Sleep.
