Universal Pictures has set the Cats movie release date, and it’s taking the place of another musical adaptation. Cats will be coming to theaters on December 20, 2019, a date on which the studio had previously planned on releasing the Wicked movie. That film will soon be moved to a new date.
20th Century Fox’s Murder on the Orient Express sequel, Death on the Nile, and a little film called Star Wars: Episode IX are also scheduled for December 20, 2019.
Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls), Taylor Swift, James Corden and Ian McKellen will star in Working Title Films’ Cats movie. Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) will direct the big screen adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit musical. Hooper is helming from a screenplay by Lee Hall (Billy Elliott). Filming is scheduled to begin in the UK in November.
Oscar winner Hudson is set to play Grizabella, though it is unknown who Swift, Corden and McKellen will play in Cats.
Based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the musical is set amongst a larger-than-life junkyard playground and is alive with our favorite feline characters, including Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffelees, Macavity, Jennyanydots, Old Deuteronomy, Grizabella and Skimbleshanks.
The Jellicle Cats come out to play on one special night of the year – the night of the Jellicle Ball. One by one they tell their stories for the amusement of Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, who must choose one of the Cats to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life.
