Alec Baldwin Drops Out of the New Joker Movie

Just two days ago, it was announced that Alec Baldwin was joining Joaquin Phoenix in Warner Bros. Pictures‘ upcoming Joker movie from The Hangover director Todd Phillips. Baldwin would play Thomas Wayne, the father of Bruce Wayne, aka Batman.

The Hollywood Reporter said that the role in the script featured “Thomas Wayne as a cheesy and tanned businessman who is more in the mold of a 1980s Donald Trump.”

Today, Baldwin posted the following tweet:

We thought that meant he wasn’t going to play the role in the mold of Donald Trump. But no, he has now revealed he has dropped out of the film completely. Talking to USA Today, the actor said: “I’m no longer doing that movie,” while citing scheduling issues. “I’m sure there are 25 guys who can play that part,” he added.

The cast of the film also includes Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Marc Maron, and Robert De Niro. Beetz (Deadpool 2Atlanta) will play a single mother who catches the interest of the man who will become the Clown Prince of Crime, while Conroy portrays the Joker’s mother, Penny. Maron will play the role of a booking agent on Robert De Niro’s talk show who plays a part in booking Phoenix’s character, and eventually causing him to go mad.

Warner Bros. Pictures has set an October 4, 2019 release date for the Todd Phillips-directed Joker. The film centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of a man disregarded by society is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.

Phillips will direct from a screenplay he co-wrote with writer Scott Silver (The Fighter). The film will be produced by Emma Tillinger Koskoff and executive produced by Richard Baratta. Joker is expected to begin production in September in New York.

Filming is scheduled to begin in two weeks. The movie will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.
