Ewan McGregor has said many times in the past that he would like to play Obi-Wan Kenobi again, but it doesn’t sound like it will happen any time soon. Appearing on The View recently, the Christopher Robin star said he “would totally do it, of course. There’s no plans as such, to do it as far as I know.”
Reports have previously said that an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie could be set between Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. Obi-Wan lived in exile on Tatooine, having delivered the infant Luke Skywalker to his uncle and aunt. McGregor previously played Obi-Wan Kenobi in Episodes I, II and III.
“There must be a good story to tell as they’re doing spin-offs. There’s likely to be a good Obi-Wan between me and Alec Guinness in that time,” said McGregor. About the often-asked question from reporters, he added: “I’ve answered yes so many times that it looks like I’m sort of touting for work at Disney’s door.”
About a year ago, The Hollywood Reporter said that Stephen Daldry was in early talks to direct an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie. Then in June of this year, a report came out that the Obi-Wan movie and a James Mangold-directed Boba Fett film were put on hold after the disappointing Solo: A Star Wars Story box office figures. That film earned $391.9 million worldwide.
Will we ever see an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie? All we know right now is that Star Wars: Episode IX is currently filming for a December 2019 release, while Lucasfilm is also working with The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson on a new trilogy, as well as a new series of films from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.
