Variety has published a report on what is happening with Sony’s Spider-Man Universe beyond the release of Venom, which opens on October 5. We already know that Daniel Espinosa and Jared Leto are working on a Morbius movie, and Richard Wenk is writing a screenplay for a Kraven the Hunter film. Sony Pictures is also developing movies based on Silk, Jackpot, and Nightwatch.
According to the trade, the studio is scrapping the previously-planned Silver & Black, which would have teamed up Silver Sable and Black Cat. Instead, the characters will now get their own, standalone films, the first of which is expected to be for Black Cat.
“We believe Black Cat is enough of her own character with a great backstory and a canon of material to draw from to justify her own film,” Sanford Panitch, president of Columbia Pictures, said.
Gina Prince-Bythewood, who was attached to write and direct Silver & Black, will likely depart the project. She will, however, remain on board as a producer on both the Silver Sable and Black Cat films. She has also signed on to direct The Old Guard. The trade adds that Sony is adamant that she will replaced by another female director.
