Is a Power Rangers Sequel in Development?

When Saban’s Power Rangers movie hit theaters in March of 2017, critics were no fans and the film was able to bring in just $142 million worldwide on a $100 million budget. But that is not stopping Hasbro, which has since bought the rights to the property from Saban, from moving forward with a Power Rangers sequel.

According to Licensing.org (via Heroid Hollywood), Power Rangers products are still very profitable and that is most likely the driving factor in continuing the movie franchise.

“Power Rangers will generate an operating profit similar to Hasbro’s other franchise brands and has a ‘significant opportunity for growth given where the brand had been most recently,’ Goldner said. Hasbro will work with a film studio to develop a new Power Rangers movie as a follow-up to the 2017 release. In addition to Power Rangers, Hasbro also acquired Saban properties including My Pet Monster, Luna Petunia, Popples and Julius Jr.”

The first film, which was released by Lionsgate, was directed by Dean Israelite and stars Dacre Montgomery, RJ Cyler, Naomi Scott, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Bill Hader, Bryan Cranston, and Elizabeth Banks. Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.
