Last night, at New Line Cinema’s special Scarediego event, the studio confirmed that Annabelle 3 is in development. According to IGN, the third movie will be written and directed by Gary Dauberman, screenwriter of the first two Annabelle movies and IT. The movie will mark his directorial debut.
James Wan, who is again producing, also revealed that Annabelle 3 will be set inside the home of paranormal investigators Lorraine and Ed Warren and will see the scary doll bring to life the other cursed artifacts kept locked up in the Warrens’ archive. Those objects then begin targeting the Warrens’ 10-year-old daughter, Judy.
Wan joked that the film is basically “A Night at the Museum with Annabelle,” which sounds mighty creepy.
In related doll news, The Hollywood Reporter also announced yesterday that producers James Wan and Jason Blum are teaming up on the techno horror thriller M3GAN. Gerard Johnstone (Housebound) will direct from a script by Akela Cooper (Marvel’s Luke Cage, American Horror Story). Filming is scheduled to begin this fall.
According to the trade, the story is about “a brilliant toy company roboticist who uses artificial intelligence to develop M3GAN, a life-like doll programmed to emotionally bond with her newly orphaned niece. But when the doll’s programming works too well, she becomes overprotective of her new friend… with terrifying results.”
Michael Clear, of Wan’s Atomic Monster banner, will executive produce with Judson Scott shepherding for the company. Blumhouse’s Couper Samuelson will executive produce, while Ryan Turek will oversee for the banner.
